Swine Research Farm Associate - Colo, IA

Furst-McNess Company has an immediate opening for a Swine Research Farm Associate.  This individual will be responsible for day to day equipment and maintenance of the Furst-McNess Swine Research Facility, including grounds, feed system, ventilation, bio-vator, buildings, scales and all equipment related to swine production. Other duties will include the daily requirements of wean to finish research production including, but not limited to, operating the feed system, operating the ventilation system, assisting with vaccination of pigs, weighing pigs, measuring feed, and individual pig care with emphasis on production protocols, animal welfare and site appearance.


  • Take ownership of daily barn responsibilities in relation to animal care which includes the daily pen to pen management of air, water, and monitoring feed.  Ensure complete comprehension and operation of the environmental equipment on site.  Assist in loading and unloading of pigs.  Perform any additional tasks necessary for the care of the animals as directed.  Communication between all parties necessary for daily care of animals.
  • Maintain desired research protocols and standard operating procedures within research and the finishing system.  Perform daily visual inspection.  Maintain accurate records and required paperwork on a prompt basis.  Maintain accurate animal inventory by pen, room and facility.
  • Assist with research activities such as allotment of animals and weighing pigs (pen and individual weights).
  • Assist with loading pigs into trucks during marketing as needed.
  • Record the manure measurement for each individual pit on a weekly basis and send the report to the Four Leaf Site Ownership.
  • Maintain and adhere to the Furst-McNess Bio Security protocols and that all individuals on premise follow the established protocols.
  • Responsible for animal husbandry with an emphasis on individual pig care.  Assist with identifying and treating sick animals with a variety of solutions by injection, oral application, or other methods as required.
  • Assist with vaccinations as required.
  • Assist with health and bio security of site and proper euthanization of animals when needed by PQA+ trained standards.
  • Operate within agreed upon performance parameters.
  • Monitor, record and report maintenance schedules for facilities, equipment and feed system.
  • Maintain site appearance including a high standard of cleanliness throughout the facility with basic housekeeping, laundry duties, organization of supplies and other misc. items.  Maintain compost area.  Clear entire site including driveway of snow, weeds and rodent control.  Maintain grass of site and spray for preventive control of weeds.
  • Understand the onsite notification and alarm system and uphold the maintenance of alarms, backup equipment, and generator on site, and respond to alarms 24 hours a day.
  • Responsible for maintenance and function of site equipment which includes routine maintenance of all equipment.
  • Responsible to assist with the maintenance and operation of the FanCom Feeding System on a weekly and as needed basis.
  • Be responsive to visible signs of animal discomfort.
  • Be responsive to verbal alarms and sounds of animals.
  • Perform other work-related duties as requested or required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be able to succeed within the culture of the Furst-McNess Company.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without accommodation.
  • Education equivalent to a Bachelors’ degree or higher the equivalent in related work experience, along with 3 or more years of livestock operations management.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office products. Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, and is capable of utilizing these skills within all levels of the Company as well as externally.
  • Be able to work on weekends.
  • Be able to establish and carry out specific courses of action for self and/or groups in an independent manner; willing to commit to long hours of work in order to reach goals. This may include pig receiving, vaccination, allotment, and sales outside of normal working hours or on weekends.
  • Able to create positive energy (motivation) in both individuals and groups when it comes to implementation of research protocol and knowledge.
  • Be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs. moving up to 100 yards daily, be able to lift 15 lbs. repeatedly on a daily basis from side to side for at least 1 hour.  Push and/or pull a minimum of 500 lbs. in a cart with wheels when required.  Squat to floor, grip small objects with ease and twist at least 45 degrees.
  • Be capable of repeated actions.
  • Be able to move, load and unload animals 300 plus pounds.
  • Be able to walk and stand for long periods of time on different surfaces including concrete.
  • Be able to climb in and out of pens, over gates and obstacles.
  • Be able climb different types of ladders including feed bin ladders.
  • Be able to maintain balance on all surfaces.
  • Be able to retain and perform written and spoken instructions.
  • Be able to spend long hours at a computer work station.
  • Be able to spend time in confinement livestock facilities.
  • Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories of swine.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office products, with expertise in Excel.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with vendors.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, and is capable of utilizing these skills within all levels of the Company as well as externally.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service to all associates and management staff, showing a sense of urgency relative to solving problems, performing assigned tasks, employee concerns, etc.
  • Ability to effectively organize work schedules and manage multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member within the facility and company, as a whole.
  • Ability to be flexible and be willing to change along with recommending and making changes that can enhance our ability to serve both internal and external customers more effectively and in a professional manner.
  • Ability to travel, either by car or by commercial plane, including overnight stays, as business dictates.  Must, at all times, possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record (within guidelines set forth in company vehicle policy).
